Puberty comes with several bodily changes. One of the most troublesome is the teen acne problem. In puberty, the root of the problem is related to hormones-specifically, testosterone which triggers sebum production. As one grows into adulthood, sebum level and testosterone levels drop and thus the skin starts to clear up.
There are several things one can do to deal with the teen acne problem. There is also something that should never be done and that is to squeeze pimples as this can cause possible infection and scars that make the problem worse rather than improve it. Also, this is a sure way of spreading acne.
This is a stage during which one is very self conscious and acne makes the problem much worse but one should not get aggressive about dealing with it. While the skin should be treated with more than ordinary soap and water to keep the problem, these should be chosen with care.
Also, the tendency to use a combination of products to hide or control the acne can cause flare ups that aggravate the problem. Keep the following in mind when taking care of skin that is distress with teen acne.
A spot-fighting cleanser should be the first step followed by an oil-free moisturizer. Oily skin types are the most susceptible to acne and these products will help to control the excess oil. These both have ingredients that act on the skin to control sebum production so more spots do not from and skin-clearing ingredients that gradually fade away the spots and blemishes.
Products with Aloe Vera are also great for keeping the skin supple and clear. Be sure to wash skin with these products every morning and night, not only once in the morning. Keeping the skin clean keeps the pores clear and minimizes chances of more pimples forming as well as blackheads or whiteheads.
Another important step in skin care is exfoliating. This should be done specifically with a facial scrub rather than body scrub. Facial scrub has fine grains compared to body scrub whose larger grains can scratch the delicate facial skin and cause blemishes. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the skin. It leaves the skin pores clean and clear and gets rid of oil build-up that contributes to the formation of pimples. Twice a week is sufficient.
Teen boys who are shaving need to be extra careful when doing this. The goal should be to glide over pimples to avoid puncturing them which will cause them to bleed and will leave a dark mark. Also choose shaving products like foams or gels which soften the skin before you shave. Avoid facial products that have harsh ingredients like alcohol and menthol which can sting the skin especially on open zits. If you go to barbershops for a shave, ensure high hygiene standards are observed so that you don’t get an infection on the pimples.
Diet also plays an important part in clearing up skin. Water is the best drink you can have for your skin. It clears the skin from the inside out, flushing out toxins that tend to leave the body through the skin when there is an overload. Also, a diet rich in vitamins derived from fruits and vegetables adds to the health and radiance of the skin.
Also consider taking a supplement to ensure you get all the nutrients as recommended especially vitamins A and E which are crucial for healthy skin.
While it is not possible to get away completely from it, find healthy ways to least deal with stress. It can cause skin break outs. Have definite, consistent and effective ways to take off steam. This could be engaging in sports, pursuing hobbies or just taking time out to just be alone and relax or meditate.
Medical treatment:
For one with a severe teen acne problem, medical treatment, specifically from a dermatologist, can be sought. An oral dose can be prescribed in addition to topical treatments. The creams, gels or lotions are strong and can be quite effective. These should however only be used on prescription and used as instructed as they are quite potent and misusing them could damage skin.
Finally, do not let a teen acne problem dent your esteem such that it affects how you see yourself or think others see you. It is your attitude, confidence and outlook that others spot that genuine people spot.
